Surgical Removal of Teeth
Some straightforward extractions can be performed by a general dentist. However, most dentists refer patients to oral surgeons for surgical removal of teeth because of their extensive experience. As specialists, oral surgeons surgically remove teeth on a daily basis and handle the more complicated removal of teeth, such as:
- Teeth that are damaged or fractured
- Infected teeth
- Severely decayed teeth
- Teeth that are impacted (not fully erupted through the tissue)
- Wisdom teeth (third molars)
In addition, since oral surgeons have extensive training and experience in the administration of anesthesia, dentists refer patients to Dr. Nellen or Dr. Goeckerman who would be more comfortable receiving sedation or general anesthesia during surgical procedures. Our offices are equipped with modern operatories and advanced monitoring equipment for safe delivery of anesthesia. Our experienced team of surgical assistants is certified in outpatient anesthesia.
Special Considerations for Dental Implant Patients
Patients who are considering tooth replacement with dental implants are also referred to Dr. Nellen or Dr. Goeckerman for surgical tooth removal. By using a special surgical technique, teeth can be removed so that the bone surrounding the teeth is preserved, which creates a better site for implant placement.
